THIS MONTH’S MEETING
Thanks to Jon Adair for being our special guest last month. The stories, memories, and information he shared were very interesting and fun to hear. Those were times he will always remember and we’re glad he took the time to share them with us.
A few month’s ago some of our members met with Sammy Salvo and recorded an interesting and informative interview with him concerning his career in the music business. The interview has been posted on our website for your listening pleasure but now you can come to the October meeting this Sunday and watch the interview on DVD. The interview covers Sammy’s career from his first demo recording in Nashville, his first record released – which was recorded at Joe Rumore’s house – and on to his RCA hits. Along with his brother, George who was there as writer, promoter, and producer, Sammy had quite a time in the music business and thanks to both he and George for agreeing to do this interview. Be there to see this important part of music history.
PRESIDENT’S UPDATE
Fall in Alabama always means football and win or lose the food is always great! I also enjoy the weather as it is a great time to go record hunting. October kicks off with the Allentown, PA show that features an all 45’s and 78’s show on Saturday, October 3rd then a more traditional show on Sunday, the 4th. Next to the Birmingham shows it is one of the best shows for 45 collectors out there. This year it will be a week before our October meeting so I will have time to get back before our meeting on the 11th.
October 17th in Knoxville, Tennessee another good show will be at the Days Inn North for a Saturday show, followed on Sunday the 18th by a show in Johnson City, TN at the Double-Tree Hilton. Not a bad drive for a weekend get-away to the mountains and lots of good records available. Then there’s a October 25th show in Charlotte NC, Springhill Suites – Ballantyne, 12325 Johnson Rd. A new show is being added on Saturday, November 21st in East Ridge, TN near the Chattanooga Airport. This will be the day before the Atlanta Show on November 22 at the Marriott off I-85 near Emery University. All shows are 10am – 4pm local time and $2 admission.
After a re-boot of the Austin Record Show in late May the dates for next year have been announced. The Friday through Sunday show will move to June in 2016 and again be at the Palmer Auditorium downtown where it returned in 2015. Next year’s dates are June 17th through 19th. That puts it about two months before our August show, time for dealers to reload before coming here.
Happy record hunting folks!
Ray
UPCOMING BRC MEETINGS
Our November meeting is scheduled to be another in-house record show. A BRC record show on a much smaller scale. Members are invited to bring any records they want to sell or trade and set up at one of the tables that will be there. We plan on sending out special invitations to some of our past record show attendees from our mailing list and give them a chance to look through the vinyl there. There will be only 12-15 tables and the crowd will be much smaller but it’s a chance to do what we enjoy best, looking for records and having fun and fellowship with some non-members who have the same passion for vinyl we do. Plan on being there for this special meeting.
And get ready for our December meeting. We will again do our Dirty Santa game and of course to go along with the giving season we will do the ‘Free For All’ once again. Members can bring records that they are willing to have other members look through and take what they want for free.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
What does The Tornadoes, Acker Bilk, Laurie London, and Cliff Richard have in common. They are all British artists who had a recording that charted in the US before the Beatles and other British acts invaded in 1964. I was looking over my want list the other day and when I noticed Cliff Richard’s 45, ‘Move It’, I thought I’d see what he’s up to now. Although Cliff only had two records that charted in the Top 40 I have always felt he was important in the early stages of British rock. ‘Living Doll’ and a cover of ‘It’s All In The Game’ were his two Top 40 US songs but I think ‘Move It’ was a much better song than those. He along with male artists Tommy Steele, Billy Fury, Adam Faith, and Marty Wilde were out there rocking while acts such as the Beatles, Stones, Animals, and others were just getting formed. Cliff had over 20 recordings in the UK Top 20 before the 1964 British Invasion which included 8 number 1 hits. In the UK Cliff is the most successful British male solo artist of all time. He also has the distinction of being the only artist to have achieved UK number one singles throughout five consecutive decades, in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. In 1995 Cliff became Sir Cliff Richard as he was Knighted by the Queen. As of now Cliff is still recording and performing world-wide.
BRC NEWS
It’s time to select officers for 2016. Last year we voted to have a committee prepare and present a slate of officers to the club and have them approved for the upcoming year. Please give considerable thought to taking a position if the committee talks to you about serving. None of the positions are a one-person show. You will have plenty of help to do the job needed. Here are the positions that will be needed to be filled:
President
VP Advertising
VP Dealer Relations
VP Technology
VP Monthly Programs
VP Membership
VP Hall of Fame
Treasurer
Each VP position will need a committee under them with 2-3 members to work on the duties of the position. Please make plans to volunteer to serve on a committee. The final slate of officers will be ready for membership vote at the November. Want to ask about a position now? Email me back.
It has been said that 10% of the people do 90% of the work. Don’t let that happen. Thanks.
UPDATE – as of this time we have all officer positions hopefully filled except for one and it should be filled soon. The final slate will be shared at the November meeting.
